Invisible Network

This collaboration with Maria Corejova, created for Versionfest 2004, was part of Chronozone, a series of experiments in using Fluxus-style algorithmic performances to create new networks across vast distances.

For this piece,  we constructed two simultaneous videos in two parts of the world, and played them back later on two televisions. Each video was comprised of a single take, shot with a stationary videocamera.

At a pre-arranged hour, we each trained our camera on a tv tuned to a 24-hour cable news channel, the time visible. We then started recording just in time to catch the hour’s headlines. As soon as the headlines began, Maria and I each began banging out a rhythm on our respective tv monitor.

We continued beating the screens until the news broke for commercial advertisements, when we turned off our cameras.
